A dozen celebrities have willingly allowed themselves to be upstaged... by their own cats and dogs. Animal loving stars including Alesha Dixon, Kym Ryder and Alex James will pose with their pets for the 2009 PDSA Pet Pawtraits charity calendar, launched this summer.
Top photographer Scarlet Page, daughter of Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, has been announced as the photographer for the leading veterinary charity’s calendar and joins an illustrious line up of former PDSA Pet Pawtraits photographers, including Lord Lichfield, Penny Lancaster and Jason Fraser.
Scarlet is currently snapping the twelve star pets and their celebrity owners for the calendar – including Summer Strallen, rising star of the West End who plays Maria in The Sound of Music, with her Maltese Chihuahua cross dog Bam Bam.
Strictly Come Dancing winner Alesha Dixon will partner her dog Roxy; award winning soap actress Kym Ryder of Coronation Street co-stars with dog Charlie; and cat Toots duets with chart topper Sandi Thom.
Comedian and actor Johnny Vegas, star of Benidorm, has been photographed with his miniature dachshund Frank, and ex-Blur musician and columnist Alex James will feature with his dog Socks.
The Pet Pawtraits calendar is one of PDSA’s major fundraising initiatives. Sales from the calendar go directly to help fund free veterinary care for pets in need of vets. The charity is funded entirely from public support and its PetAid hospitals, branches and practices provide much needed free treatment to thousands of sick and injured animals every day.
Commenting on this year’s calendar, photographer Scarlet Page said, “I have two fantastic moggies – a black cat called Tommy who is 17 and a nine-year-old ginger called Archie – so pets have always been a huge part of my life. I simply cannot imagine life without them. That’s why I took on this project and I am really happy to be part of such a worthwhile and inspiring campaign.”
Scarlet has photographed some of the biggest stars in the world, from Robbie Williams to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. She has been official photographer for The Darkness and, in 2006, held an exhibition featuring portraits of celebrities with their children and included Pearl and Daisy Lowe, Sadie Frost and K T Tunstall.
PDSA's Pet Pawtraits 2009 calendar will be available to buy for £4.99 from 22 August 2008. To purchase a calendar visit one of PDSA’s 179 charity shops around the UK, click onto the PDSA website at www.pdsa.org.uk/petpawtraits, or call 0800 917 2509.
