In light of new statistics on animal neglect and cruelty, the UK's leading veterinary charity, PDSA, has urged more low-income pet owners to make use of its PetAid services.
"In a number of these distressing cases, pet owners have claimed they cannot afford veterinary treatment," said PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon Sean Wensley. "We want to remind people that PDSA is here to provide free veterinary care for the sick and injured pets of people in need. Eligibilty is quite straightforward: if you receive housing benefits or council tax benefits, then you can qualify for PDSA treatment."
"We wish to ensure that all eligible pets are cared for by PDSA vets, rather than being left untreated and their needs neglected."
PDSA cares for more than 350,000 pet patients across the UK and has seen a 10% rise in the number of pets receiving treatment at its PetAid hospitals and branches in the last year.
The charity has 47 PetAid hospitals and branches, which provide more than 1.8 million free veterinary treatments and over 200,000 preventive treatments, such as vaccinations and neutering, to the sick and injured pets of people in need every year.
In addition, more than 36,000 pets are registered for PDSA-funded veterinary care through contracted PetAid practices.
